· From the Chairman
|
|
|
Greetings Members,
2007 promises continued positive change for the Chamber. We started
January with the introduction of a new Professional Development program
for members. Twice a month, members and their employees have an
opportunity to participate in two-hour educational sessions ranging from
marketing ideas to learning Microsoft Excel to getting a handle on
business taxes. Check out the Chamber
website for future classes.
To continue to achieve the Board of Directors’ goal for 2007 of enhancing
Chamber members’ education and exposure, the Chamber’s first Restaurant
Guide will begin distribution in April. The brochure will feature dining,
catering and banquet opportunities to tourists, Southwest King County employers/employees,
and residents. The guides will be available in the Chamber and Visitor
Center offices, local city halls, libraries, at hotels, and participating
restaurants. In the first year, 10,000 guides will be printed.
The Restaurant Guide is the first in a series of guides to be published
to promote Chamber members’ businesses. The focus of future guides has
not been determined at this point. Your suggestions will certainly be
appreciated. We are considering a Home Guide that will feature all businesses
that can help a homeowner. This guide would include real estate
professionals, financing professionals, hardware and furniture stores,
electronics, maintenance, etc. If you have an idea for a future guide,
please let our President/CEO Nancy Damon (ndamon@swkcc.org) or me
(chuck.cox@raymondjames.com) know.
Other member benefits we are currently developing are a Member-to-Member
Benefits program, which will offer discounts to Chamber members and their
employees, and a medical insurance program for Chamber members. We’ll
keep you posted on the progress.
If there are other programs you would like us to explore, please let us
know. Have a great month!
Chuck Cox

· SUCCESS Foundation Student Scholarship Fundraising Raffle
|
|
|
The SUCCESS Foundation kicked off
its annual student scholarship fundraising efforts at the December 8th
Membership Luncheon. Every year, the SUCCESS Foundation honors one or
more high school students with a scholarship to be used toward continued
education. The number of $1,000 scholarships varies from year to year.
Eligible students are those that have been selected as Business Students
of the Month throughout the current school year. The winner(s) will be
recognized at the Chamber’s Education Luncheon on June 8, 2007.
The SUCCESS Foundation plans three separate raffles for this school year.
The raffles are for a trip to Mexico, two unrestricted airline tickets,
and a trip to Roche Harbor. The first raffle is for two unrestricted
airline tickets from Alaska Airlines to any destination within the
Alaska/Horizon Air service area. One ticket requires a $10.00 donation.
There are only 250 raffle tickets, so the odds of winning are 1 in 250!
The winner need not be present at the drawing on March 9, 2007 to win.
Help support the SUCCESS Foundation’s student scholarship fundraising by
purchasing raffle tickets at the Chamber office or at Chamber membership
luncheons and networking breakfasts. The Chamber thanks Alaska Airlines
for the tickets.

· City Beats - Burien
|
|
|
North Highline Annexation -The Burien City Council will soon be
discussing the results of a detailed financial study commissioned last
fall, following the designation of the entire 31,000 population North
Highline unincorporated area as a “potential annexation area” (PAA) in
November, 2006. The City contracted with Berk & Associates in
November 2006 to conduct a study which will include revenue and cost
projections through 2022 if the City annexes (or does not annex) North
Highline. The Seattle City Council in December also voted to designate
all of North Highline as a PAA. Both Seattle and Burien have filed
challenges to these conflicting designations before the Central Puget Sound
Growth Management Hearings Board. The Hearings Board is expected to issue
decisions on the challenges by August 2007.
Town Square – Abatement work prior to demolition is being
conducted on two buildings on the site of the future Burien Town Square.
The former Gottschalks building will be razed to make way for Phase One,
a seven-story building that will have residential units on the five upper
floors, and parking and retail space on the two lower levels. The Puget
Sound Education Services District building will be demolished and
replaced by the joint Burien City Hall/King County Regional Library.
Hazardous materials including asbestos are being removed from both
buildings prior to demolition. Developer Urban Partners announced it will
open a marketing center near the Town Square site in May or June. The
center will include a full-scale model of a Town Square residential unit.
City Hall Retirements - Two of the City’s longtime department
heads are retiring this spring after serving the City since Burien
incorporated in 1993. Linda Gorton, Finance Director, and Jan Roegner,
Director of Community Relations and Human Resources, were among the
handful of Burien’s first employees 14 years ago when Burien became a
city.
Burien Clean Sweep - Burien’s annual community-wide clean-up is
planned for Saturday, April 28. Hundreds of volunteers will gather at the
downtown fire station at 8 a.m. They are assigned an area of downtown or
park where they can pick up litter and sweep. In some places,
participants pull weeds and plant flowers. The volunteers meet back at
the fire station at noon for a free barbecue lunch and prizes.

· City Beats - SeaTac
|
|
|
State Senate Committee on Health and Long-Term Care - At the invitation of Senator Karen
Keiser, Assistant City Manager Tina Rogers testified on February 5 at the
Senate Committee on Health and Long-Term Care. The testimony described
the City of SeaTac’s employee wellness program, its 15 year history and the
level of City funding, as well as anecdotal and measurable results of the
program. This testimony was supportive of SB 5665, sponsored by Senator
Keiser, which would establish a state employee health program.

Center hosted a Grand Opening on February 5, 2007. Operating hours are

City of SeaTac Proposition No. 1 – Fireworks: Proposition No. 1
went before the SeaTac citizens in the February 6, 2007 King County
Special Election. This measure would have repealed SeaTac's current
ordinance (05-1006) which bans fireworks except for displays authorized
by permit and would establish a new ordinance allowing fireworks sales
from June 28 through July 5 and from December 27 through December 31
annually and would have allowed fireworks to be discharged on July 3,
July 4, July 5, December 31, and until 1:00 AM on January 1 annually.
This measure was brought forward per an initiative petition proposed by
voters through the initiative and referendum powers granted to voters by
SeaTac Municipal Code (SMC) 1.10.040.
The election results have remained consistent with approximately 39
percent of the voters voting yes and 61 percent voting no. If this
proposition fails, SeaTac’s ban on fireworks will remain in effect. The
election results were officially certified on February 21, 2007.
For information about fireworks permits, contact the SeaTac Fire
Department at (206) 973-4500. The City’s Code section on public displays
is SMC 5.35.050. For election results, go to www.metrokc.gov/elections/200702/res.htm.

International Boulevard between SR 518 and SR 599. Matthew Gardner will
present his findings at the Tukwila City Council meeting on Monday,
February 26. The meeting is open to the public. For more information, you

Green-Duwamish River Watershed - The next Green-Duwuamish
Watershed Visioning Forum meeting will be held Friday March 23rd from
3:30 to 5:30 at the Tukwila Community Center.
The meetings are a chance to get together and talk about the many
activities, projects, concerns, and other issues facing the
Green-Duwamish watershed. The watershed has a tremendous effect on
businesses in the area in terms of how a beautiful and high quality river
can attract employees looking for exercise and a healthy environment or
even tourists and new residents. River and watershed projects also make
great team building exercises.
The agenda in March will include updates from working group
sub-committees and time for small groups to work together towards action
on specific projects/issues.
At the March meeting, sub-committees will provide updates on the
following topics:
- River Mapping
project/River Visioning
- Boat Launches/Access
- Trails/Signage
- Water Quality
- Habitat
- Various Master Planning
processes
In addition to the visioning forums, the Green-Duwamish Watershed
Alliance (GDWA) has reformed and is looking for a web site designer. For
