·  President's Message

Greetings Members!

2007 has certainly gotten off to a very busy start! We are busy planning our first Dining Guide, listing participating Chamber restaurant, catering and banquet members. The guide will be available through the Seattle Southside Visitor Center, at city halls, libraries, Chamber member businesses as well as the Chamber. It will be a valuable tool for visitors to our area, but also for local residents and those who come to SeaTac, Tukwila, Burien and Des Moines to work. The guide will begin distribution in late-April. If you would like to display copies of the Dining Guide at your place of business, please let me know. 206.575.3016 or ndamon@swkcc.org.

Also, toward the end of April, watch your mail for our 2006 Annual Report. We finished 2006 on a positive note, and with great enthusiasm and an eagerness to strengthen our programs and develop new opportunities in 2007.

I am pleased to introduce to our new Marketing Coordinator Dianna Gearhiser who will join us on April 10. Dianna will be working with members and serve as the Chamber liaison at our various committee meetings, the ACE Awards planning, the Burien Independence Day Parade and the Get-Away Golf Tournament. She is a graduate of Washington State University and has a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a Public Relations Major. Please introduce yourself and welcome Dianna when you have an opportunity to meet her.

Another event returning to the Chamber family is the Burien Independence Day Parade. Following a one- year hiatus, the Chamber is again involved in planning the 2007 parade. This will be the 84th annual Independence Day parade in Burien. We are excited to be working on this long-time community event!

New to the Chamber in the past month is the addition of two new committees – the Professional Development Committee and the Human Resources Committee. If you have any interest in learning more about these two committees or if you would like to join either committee and receive the meeting announcements, please let me know and I will add you to the list. 206.575.3016 or
ndamon@swkcc.org

Thank you for supporting the Chamber. We continue to look for ways to support businesses in our community. Your comments/suggestions are always appreciated.

Nancy Damon
President/CEO

·  Tay Yoshitani, Chief Executive Officer of Port of Seattle, to speak at April Luncheon

Tay Yoshitani, CEO of the Port of Seattle, will be the Chamber’s guest speaker at the April 13th Membership Luncheon to be held at DoubleTree – Guest Suites, 16500 Southcenter Parkway in Tukwila.

Tay Yoshitani, appointed CEO of the Port of Seattle in January, 2007, began the role in March. As CEO, he carries out policies set by the Port Commission and leads Seattle's Seaport, one of the largest container ports in North America, and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, which welcomes more than 29 million passengers a year.

Prior to joining the Port of Seattle, Yoshitani served as Senior Advisor to the National Association of Waterfront Employers (2004 to 2007), providing industry expertise on port security and environmental issues.

Previously he served as Executive Director of the Port of Oakland (2001 to 2004), where he led a significant expansion program to substantially increase the size of both the seaport and airport. He oversaw environmental permitting and planning that enabled construction to begin on the airport expansion, including the Terminal Improvement Program that used “green building” technology. He also led the effort to transfer ownership and begin cleanup of two military bases and convert them into container terminals and rail yards. By doing significant environmental cleanup at the same time as the seaport construction, the effort saved millions of dollars and nearly a decade of red tape. He served as Oakland's Deputy Executive Director from 1998 to 2001.

He is credited with creating the first master plan at the Maryland Port Administration, where he served as Executive Director (1995 to 1998). His accomplishments there included turning around the floundering Port. As Deputy Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles (1989 to 1995), he oversaw the creation of the West Coast's largest dry bulk export terminal.

·  New Airlines and Routes Coming to Sea-Tac Airport

The Port of Seattle is pleased to announce that two new airlines will soon begin service at Seattle- Tacoma International Airport providing Washington State residents with even more travel options.

In April, Midwest Airlines will launch daily non-stop service from Seattle to both Kansas City and Milwaukee.

Starting June 11, Air France will offer daily non-stop service between Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Charles de Gaulle International Airport in Paris. Air France will serve the route with an Airbus A-330-200, configured to carry 219 passengers. The connection is vitally important to business travelers. Through its Paris hub, Air France connects to all major cities within Europe and Africa, as well as other regions in their global network. The route is also expected to enhance opportunities for Washington’s tourism industry.

Air France’s new service “is a big win for the Port and for the entire state of Washington,” said Port Commission President John Creighton. “Adding airline carriers and flights at Sea-Tac Airport translates into economic gains for our entire region.”

In addition, American Airlines will offer non-stop service from Seattle to Austin, Texas, starting mid-April.

With the addition of Air France and Midwest Airlines, the total number of passenger airlines with service to Sea-Tac now stands at 27.

·  SUCCESS Foundation Mexico Raffle

The SUCCESS Foundation kicked off its annual Mexico Raffle at the March 9th Membership Luncheon. Every year, the SUCCESS Foundation honors one or more high school students with a scholarship to be used toward continued education. The number of $1,000 scholarships varies from year to year. Eligible students are those that have been selected as Business Students of the Month throughout the current school year. The winner(s) will be recognized at the Chamber’s Education Luncheon on June 8, 2007.

The SUCCESS Foundation’s Mexico Raffle is the second in a series of three raffles to raise money for the student scholarships. The first raffle, for two unrestricted first class tickets anywhere Alaska Airlines flies, was won by Tina Rogers with the City of SeaTac. The third raffle will be for a trip to Roche Harbor. The Mexico Raffle winner will receive round trip airfare between Seattle and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico on Alaska Airlines, round trip transfers between the airport and hotel, and eight days and seven nights accommodations at the Sheraton Buganvilias in Puerto Vallarta. One ticket requires a $5 donation. There are 1000 raffle tickets and the winner will be drawn at the June 8th Membership Luncheon. You need not be present to win.

Amanda Tarrant is a senior at Highline High School where she has taken the following business courses: Economics, Retail Management, Intro to Marketing, Advanced Marketing, Business Law, Marketing Seminar, Intro to Business and Future Business Leaders of America/Business Connections. She took Retail Management twice because she had a lot of fun running the student store, where she was Store Manager.

Amanda has qualified for the state DECA conference this year. She qualified for her Community Service Project, which was a Bowl-A-Thon for the Ruth Dykeman Children’s Center in Burien. Last year the Bowl-A-Thon raised $1000 and this year the money raised was $1200! Amanda was the CEO of the project and was helped by Mr. Crawley’s Retail Management class.

We wish you every success in obtaining your goals and ambitions!

·  Lisha Johnson: Teacher of the Quarter 12/2006 – 2/2007

Patricia Dunn, Principal of Highline High School, has nominated Lisha Johnson of Highline High School Teacher of the Quarter for December 2006 through February 2007. Lisha, a graduate of Central Washington University, came to Highline High School in 1989 and taught in the Business Department. In 1990, she became a full time Business Education and History teacher.

Her community and school involvement is extensive. She has been a Sunday School Teacher for the past eight years. She has been the Graphics Coordinator at South Shore Fellowship Church for eight years, with a few breaks during that time. She founded and taught Kids’ Club at South Shore Fellowship for five years, until the program ended. She helped start South Shore Fellowship’s MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group and served on the leadership team until 2001. She has been a leadership team member of the SLC (Small Learning Community) for the last three years. She has also been a CFG (Critical Friends Group) leader for the past two years.

This year at Highline High, she was an Excellence Team member. She has also been very active with the FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). She has been a volunteer teacher, a conference helper, and a professional member for the past four years. She was previously a co-advisor within this group. She also worked with the ninth grade advisory at Highline High on Community Service projects that included: canned food drives for the food bank, sending thank you cards to soldiers stationed in Iraq, the Adopt-A-Family Program, and HHS campus clean-up efforts.

In November 2006, Lisha was one of twenty-two people who went to New Orleans on a mission trip. She, and others from all around the United States, worked in St. Bernard’s Parish, one of the poorer parts of New Orleans. While there, they helped at least three families get their homes up to standard, so their property couldn’t be seized by the government.

The Southwest King County Chamber of Commerce’s Education Committee/SUCCESS Foundation honors Lisha Johnson for her stellar efforts in education and her unwavering service to her community. She is truly an inspiration to her students and fellow teachers.

·  City Beats - Burien

Community Leaders Honored - The City Council honored four dedicated Burien civic leaders at the City's 2007 Awards Ceremony conducted March 2 at the Burien Elks Lodge. Jean Spohn, a Shorewood community activist, was named 2007 Environmental Leader; Ryan Warnes, general manager at BBC Dodge, was named Business Leader; Patty Burgess, was named 2007 Educational Leader on behalf of the Highline High School Alumni Foundation; and Fay Alpaugh, a volunteer at the Burien Senior Center, was named 2007 Community Activist.

1st Avenue South Project – Burien’s main arterial, 1st Avenue South, is being torn up between 160th and 152nd streets as the road improvement shifts into full gear. Much of the work is being conducted at night, with segments of 1st Avenue South closed from 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. The City has set up a hotline, 206-439-3162, to keep residents and businesses informed on traffic disruptions. The project is expected to take 18 months, with completion in 2008.

Ambaum Boulevard project – Another key arterial, Ambaum Boulevard SW, is scheduled for a major reconstruction following the 1st Avenue South project. The section of the Ambaum corridor between Southwest 153rd Street and Des Moines Memorial Drive is one of Burien’s highest accident locations. The proposed project will re-channel the corridor to provide a continuous left-turn lane, two travel lanes and bicycle lanes, as well as repair sidewalks and complete several missing links.

Summer activities - The City’s parks and recreation staff is busy scheduling performers and firming up plans for festivals, concerts, parades and other fun community events. The season begins with the opening of Burien’s Farmers Market on May 10, followed by the Strawberry and Arts Festival on June 23 & 24, and Concerts in the Park beginning in July. Burien’s signature event is the annual July 4th parade down Southwest 152nd Street.

·  City Beats - SeaTac

SeaTac Business Ambassador Team (BAT) - The City is working to implement a Business Ambassador Team comprised of key SeaTac business stakeholders. Included in the responsibilities of the BAT, is assistance in a branding campaign and formulation of an economic development work plan, support in attracting new businesses, and input to the City to help improve the business environment. The team will meet on an ad hoc basis and will be staffed by Todd Cutts, Economic Development Manager.

SeaTac Community Center off to a Great Start - The Community Center is starting off the year with record high revenues. The fitness room saw a 7% increase in revenue from 2004 to 2005, and an 18% increase in revenue from 2005 to 2006. This trend continues in 2007, as all of the early months have yielded record high fitness room revenue. Additionally, the drop-in programs (ie. basketball, pickleball) and facility rentals have already broken prior years’ records for revenues received in January and February. The newly remodeled banquet room has only a handful of Saturdays available to rent in 2007, and Friday nights and Sundays are booked on a weekly basis. The increase in activity is due in large part to the expanded space and remodel.

Funding for the Performing Arts Stage Cover - The Parks and Recreation Department has been awarded $15,000 through the 2006 Arts Cultural Facilities Grant. The funding will assist with the design and construction of the Performing Arts Stage cover. This was a very highly competitive process that attracted numerous worthy applicants with excellent projects. This project will have a major impact on the events scheduled throughout the year and be a great addition to Angle Lake Park. The project is currently in the design phase and scheduled to be installed prior to the International Festival.

Westside Trail Federal Grant - The City recently received confirmation of a federal grant award of $737,000 toward funding Westside Trail construction from South 134th Street to South 156th Street. The City is also pursuing funding opportunities for the trail section from South 156th Street to South 168th Street, and hope for success there as well.

Sales Tax Rates Increase - Effective April 1, 2007, retail sales and use tax within all of King County will increase 1/10th of one percent (.001). The increase in this tax rate will be used for transportation. The current retail sales tax rate for Tukwila is 8.8%. The April increase will bring it to 8.9%. Only about 10% of the sales tax generated in Tukwila goes to the City. The rest goes to the State, County, and transit.
