Burien

Potential North Highline Annexation: This spring the City of Burien conducted a series of three “Community Conversations” and a city-wide survey to provide information and determine the public’s feelings on the potential annexation of all, part or none of unincorporated North Highline. King County held four annexation open houses for North Highline residents to provide information and answer questions about potential annexation to Seattle or Burien. Later in the summer both the Burien and Seattle city councils will decide whether or not to pursue the annexation. A public vote by residents in the annexation areas would take place by November 2007 and the annexation of the entire area no later than March 2009.

1st Avenue South project: The City of Burien held the ground-breaking ceremony on June 14 on the 1st Avenue South Road Improvement project. Work on the road improvement is scheduled to start in June and last approximately 18 months. The $19.3 million project will improve the safety and look of the roadway and improve traffic flow along the busy corridor.

Town Square Open House:  An Open House was held May 31 where the public viewed recently completed designs for the Town Square public park as well as other information about the downtown development.  Town Square’s one-acre park/open space will be the central focal point of downtown and will be the community’s main gathering place. It will include water features, trees, and grassy areas where children can play or people can sit and enjoy music or another performance on the park’s stage. Festivals and other community events such as the Farmers Market and Concerts in the Park will be held in the park.  Ground-breaking for Town Square is planned for fall 2006.

City Manager Search:  The City Council approved selection of Waldron & Co., an executive search firm, to conduct a search for applicants for Burien City Manager.  Waldron & Co. representatives estimate the recruitment process would be completed in 90 – 120 days.

Clean Sweep:  Some 350 volunteers combed the city for litter April 29 during the City’s annual Clean Sweep. Nearly seven tons of garbage was collected.
