Sound Transit Construction Update:  Airport Link, the light rail extension to SeaTac City Center and the Airport, includes three major construction contracts.  Contract 1 will extend elevated track from the Tukwila International Boulevard Station at South 154th Street to South 160th Street.  Sound Transit originally envisioned Contract 1 as a continuation of a contract with PCL Construction already underway in Tukwila.  Extending the PCL contract into SeaTac would allow the use of a speedy construction process whereby large aerial track pieces are cast off-site and assembled on-site using a trackway erection truss.  Unable to reach agreement with PCL on costs, Sound Transit has decided to put the contract out to bid.  Design will be complete by the beginning of September, with construction expected to begin in 2007.  This change in contract approaches will delay final design and the start of construction for Contract 1, but will not delay the start of train service in December 2009.

Work on the other two construction contracts is proceeding on schedule.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT):  SeaTac Police coordinated the graduation and practical exercise for the fifth class of the Community Emergency Response Team on Saturday, May 6, at the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Academy at South 192nd Street and 1st Avenue South.  The practical exercise started at 9:00 am.  The graduates received their certificates at the end of the program.  Several SeaTac Police and Fire personnel, working together with Burien Police and Fire, help to put the class on.  The training promotes partnering emergency services personnel with the people that they serve.  CERT members receive basic response skills.  If an emergency occurs, the team is an added resource for emergency services and can assist in a variety of ways.  The next CERT class will begin in September 2006.

International Festival:  Experience SeaTac at its best during the International Festival at Angle Lake Park on June 23-25.  Festival hours are Friday from 11:00 am – 7:00 pm, Saturday from 10:00 am – 8:00 pm, and Sunday from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm.  Live entertainment will kick off at noon on Saturday with a Japanese Taiko drum performance and will continue through Sunday.  Arts & Craft vendors and food vendors will be selling their wares.  A children’s area will open after the parade on Saturday at approximately 11:30 am and will continue on Sunday.  The annual International Festival Parade begins at 10:30 am at Tyee High School and will travel to Angle Lake Park via South 188th Street and 33rd Avenue South.

New to this year’s festival is a car show-taking place on Saturday from 1:00 am – 6:00 pm.  The car show is open to all years, makes, and models of cars.  Another new event is a skateboard competition that will be held at Valley Ridge Skate Park on Friday, June 23 beginning at 6:00 pm.

Continuing with the international theme, the City of SeaTac will be dedicating the newly located historic Seike Japanese Garden.  Festivities begin at 1:30 pm to dedicate this piece of garden history at the Highline SeaTac Botanical Garden, 13735 24th Avenue South, SeaTac.

The City of SeaTac is proud to offer this annual festival for its residents and business community.  Come celebrate and experience the cultural diversity of our community.

Police News:  SeaTac Police are working at launching a new service to the business community and the City of SeaTac to help prevent crime.  Police envision using email as a vehicle to alert businesses about crime trends and other criminal information.  The notification system will increase communication, and give valuable crime prevention and analysis tips to SeaTac businesses.  Neighborhood Watch groups will also be included in this effort after the system is built.
