From the
Chairman
Greetings!
The last few days of summer weather reminds us that it's time for
vacation, spending time with family and friends, having good times. But
don't let the summer give you a vacation from promoting your business.
Actually, this is an opportune time. In our area particularly, not only
do our cities see a good in-flux of visitors during the summer with
guests coming here to enjoy our beautiful beaches, shopping, and
participating in outdoor activities, but we are all more active with the
hot summer weather and the opportunity to be outdoors. You won't find a
better time to attract customers to your business than when everyone is
out and enjoying the summer offerings already. I don't know about you,
but when I visit a new area, I always look around at other businesses
and opportunities. You never know when you will meet someone who can
solve your problem and make your business even better. Make sure your
business name is in the community and that people can find you easily.
Summertime is also a good time to lay the groundwork for your
advertising plans later this fall. Remember to include the Chamber in
your advertising budget. The golf tournament is coming up on August 10.
This is a great opportunity to advertise to fellow golfers. Sponsorships
and foursomes are available. Just call the Chamber (206.575.1633) for
more information.
It's also a good time to become a sponsor of the Chamber's ACE Awards to
be held in November. By signing on now, your company will be listed in
all future ads leading up to the event. The sooner you commit, the more
advertising you will receive. If you would like information on becoming
an ACE sponsor, contact the Chamber at 206.575.1633.
The Dining Guides have been a great success. If you haven't received any
for your customers and employees yet, stop by the Chamber office and
pick up a supply.
Enjoy July!

Ambassador
Connection
with
Ambassador Nancy Nelson
Hello, my name is Nancy Nelson and I am the proud owner of Normandy
House Hair Productions, a beauty salon.
I am a new member to our wonderful Chamber of Commerce and decided to be
an active part of this organization. Being an Ambassador has given me
the opportunity to meet fellow business owners and the people on their
teams. I learn about your business, and you get to hear a bit about
mine. Sometimes the people look at me when I arrive like "what is she
selling" and are then pleasantly surprised when I deliver the bag of
goodies to say "thank you" for being a Chamber member, and "thank you"
for renewing your membership.
Please remember the other activities available to Chamber members each
month. The Membership Luncheon is held on the 2nd Friday of the month
and the Networking Breakfast is held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month.
You will also see me at the Golf Tournament on August 10th - Hope I will
see you there also!
Normandy House is located in Normandy Park on 1st Avenue. The salon has
been in business for over 40 years. I have been the owner the past 12
years. We do all the services for hair - shampooing, cutting, styling,
tints, foils, frosts, permanent waves, and we even do roller sets. Our
clientele includes men, women and children. I believe our oldest client
is 93 years young, and our youngest is 18 months. Call and come see us,
or stop by and have your hair done. Our number is 206-824-6830.
Remember, we Ambassadors are here to help you. We will answer your
questions and if we can't, we know where to get the answers.
Thank you for your time, I'll chat at you again someday. Nancy

City Beats -
SeaTac
Military Road South Closure:
The
full road closure of Military Road South, from South 176th Street to
South 188th Street, began June 18, 2007 and will continue through August
24, 2007. This road closure is necessary in order to get as much
construction work done as possible during the school summer break.
Through traffic will be detoured to International Boulevard. For
additional information, contact the City's Project Manager, Susan
Sanderson, at 973.4742.
The goals of the Military Road South Improvements are to reduce
congestion and increase the safety of motorists, pedestrians, and
bicyclists. Improvements include adding a traffic signal at South 182nd
Street, two way continuous left-turn lane, sidewalks, bike lanes,
landscaping, upgrading the storm drainage and street lighting systems,
and conversion of some overhead utilities to underground. The project
began in April 2007 and is expected to last for up to eighteen months.
New Futures Benefit Breakfast: Human Services Coordinator Colleen
Brandt-Schluter spoke at the Benefit Breakfast on June 12, at Benaroya
Hall. She spoke about the faces and voices of SeaTac and South King
County providing a community perspective to 500 in attendance. The
keynote address was provided by Dr. John Gottman, Ph.D. Sponsors of the
Benefit included Microsoft, King County Housing Authority, the Boeing
Company and many others. The Benefit exceeded expectations in both
attendance and funds raised.
Water Testing at Angle Lake: Since 1996, the King County
Department of Natural Resources & Parks and the Water & Land Resources
Division have monitored a number of public swimming beaches on Lake
Sammamish, Lake Washington, and Green Lake during the summer months to
determine levels of bacterial pollution and relative human health risks.
2007 marks the first year for the City of SeaTac to be part of the
Freshwater Swimming Beach Monitoring Sampling and Analysis Project.
Sampling was started May 15 and will end September 18. According to
county officials, Angle Lake is one of the cleanest lakes in the region
due to it being predominantly fed by underground springs.
Master Builders Association Breakfast: On May 17, City of SeaTac
representatives made a presentation at the Master Builders Association's
South King Issues Group breakfast in order to raise awareness of
development opportunities in the City of SeaTac. Economic Development
Manager Todd Cutts provided an overview of the City's economic
development services and highlighted programs relevant to the audience
of residential developers. Planning Director Steve Butler updated the
group on current development projects, future plans, and provided a map
highlighting residential development opportunities. Assistant City
Manager Tina Rogers informed the group of SeaTac's strategic advantages
for residential development and briefed them on the ongoing permit
streamline process. Staff then answered specific questions about future
plans and existing nuances and codes related to development in SeaTac.
Car Crime Forum: On May 15, local leaders from the hotel, rental
car, and commercial parking industries gathered at the invitation of the
City to get a better understanding of the steps being taken by the City
to mitigate car crimes in the community and to engage in a dialogue with
City officials on the topic. The forum communicated the message that
with all of the vehicles parked in our City, we are a target-rich area.
Together, government and industry must work to reduce the number of
incidents and to improve our image in order to enhance our tourism
reputation.
Assistant City Manager Tina Rogers welcomed guests and set the
collaborative tone for the event. Chief of Police Jim Graddon pledged
local law enforcement's commitment to the issue and expressed a
willingness to explore new ideas. Detective Sergeant Steve Tucker then
presented statistics, introduced crime prevention techniques, and
educated attendees of methods the police department uses to apprehend
criminals involved in car crimes. City staff and officers then fielded
questions and comments regarding car crimes, and committed to addressing
the issues raised.
