Summertime is the time when many of us take time out of our busy routine to enjoy vacation, plan family outings and barbecues, and to just enjoy the sunny days of summer. But during this down time, there is one important thing I hope you will remember to do. Nominate your business or a friend’s business for one of the A•C•E awards that will be presented at the November 2nd Awards Celebration reception at the Hilton Hotel and Conference Center.


Award categories are: Large Employer Business Excellence, Small Employer Business Excellence, Beautification and People’s Choice Award.

 

The top nominees in each award category are recognized at the ceremony with a photo and slide presentation. Awards winners are part of the banner that will be displayed at all 2007 Membership Luncheon Meetings.


Nominations will be accepted at the Chamber office until August 25, 2006. So while you are sipping your favorite beverage and relaxing by the pool, think about all the reasons your company should receive an award in 2006!

 

Another thing to think about when you are relaxing by the pool is whether you want to take the plunge this year and advertise in the Chamber’s 2007 Member Directory and Community Profile. The 2006 Get-Away Golf Tournament and Silent Auction is Just Around the Corner!

 

With all this nice weather we have been having, hopefully you have had time to polish up your golf game! August 4th is fast approaching but there is still time to sign up for this year's Get-Away Golf Tournament at Glen Acres Golf and Country Club. The day promises to be full of fun and networking opportunities. The Shotgun start is at 12:30 pm, and there will certainly be many networking opportunities.

Even if you can't make it out onto the course, you are invited to the Glen Acres dining room starting at 5:00 pm. Cost for non-golfing members is $25.

Nominating Committee to Make Recommendations

 

Chairman Paul Barden has announced the Executive Committee will serve as the Chamber's Nominating Committee to prepare recommendations for Board of Directors terms beginning January 2007. The committee's report will be presented to the Board of Directors at their August meeting and presented to Chamber members in the September Business Advocate. Board positions are open representing SeaTac, Tukwila, Burien and At-Large. The At-Large position is for members with a business address outside of SeaTac, Tukwila or Burien. Terms are
three years.

Board of Directors Vote to Explore Partnership with City of Des Moines

 

At its June meeting, the Board of Directors voted to continue partnership discussions with the City of Des Moines. The recent association with Des Moines businesses has proven very positive for both the Chamber and the Des Moines businesses involved. It is the goal to have the partnership with the City of Des Moines in place on January 1, 2007.


The Chamber looks forward to working with the City of Des Moines. There is a lot of energy in Des Moines right now with new office construction underway, more new construction planned, and the Farmers Market and other activities that invite citizens and nearby community residents to the waterfront and downtown.

 

 

Chamber Office Welcomes Two New Team Members

 

Please welcome two new people to the Southwest King County Chamber office. Andrea Desimone is the new Marketing Coordinator and Jennifer Tanzy is the new Administrative Assistant.


Andrea Desimone, a South Seattle native, comes with a background in Real Estate Marketing and a Business Marketing Degree from Western Washington University. She will be handling many of the marketing functions at the Chamber and arranging events including the monthly Membership Luncheons and Networking Breakfasts.


Jennifer Tanzy just moved to Des Moines from sunny Florida with her husband, who was transferred here with Hapag-Lloyd. Before moving to the Puget Sound, Jennifer worked with Sylvan Learning Center for eight years as the Assistant Director of Education. She will be keeping the office running smoothly, maintaining databases and performing many other functions in the office.

 

 

Boeing After Hours Offers Great Networking Opportunity

 

On Wednesday, August 16, the Boeing Company will host a special business after hours event at the Spirit of Washington Event Center, 233 Burnett Avenue South, Renton. Port Commission Seeks Input

 

Port of Seattle CEO Mic Dinsmore has announced his retirement for early in 2007. The Port Commission is dedicated to finding a new leader who will continue, and build upon, his legacy.

You can help by attending one of the meetings the Commission is holding in local communities between now and mid-August. Commission members will be looking for your comments on desired qualifications for the new Port leader. In SeaTac, the meeting will be:

Burien

Future of North Highline: The City of Burien conducted three “Community Conversations” in May and June to determine the public’s feelings on the potential annexation of none, part, or all of unincorporated North Highline.   The City Council will continue discussing this issue through the fall and choose a preferred alternative in cooperation with Seattle and King County.  A public vote by residents in the annexation areas could take place in 2007 with a possible change in governance by 2009.

 

Public Safety Funding and Property Tax Levy: The City Council has begun discussions of long-term funding for public safety through a proposed property tax levy ballot measure.  Similar to the recent successful Des Moines Public levy, the Burien levy would provide funding to maintain current levels of public safety and other basic City services.  The measure could be presented to voters as early as November 2006.

 

1st Avenue South Corridor Improvements Project:  All are invited to a  groundbreaking for the 1st Avenue S. improvement project on Tuesday, July 25 at 2 p.m. at the Herr Backyard Garden Center.  The City has set up a hotline, 206-439-3162, to keep residents and businesses informed on traffic disruptions and other information about the project.  Details about the project are also available on the City’s Website at www.ci.burien.wa.us.

 

City Manager Search:  The City has hired an executive search firm, Waldron and Co., to recruit applicants for the City Manager position.  The City Council invited Burien business representatives, advisory board members and community members to meet with the search firm to offer their views about the selection of a new City Manager.  Waldron and Co. estimates the selection process will take   90 -120 days.

 

Strawberry Festival:  Large crowds enjoyed the annual Strawberry Festival and Art Fair, June 17 & 18, at the Burien Community Center and Dottie Harper Park.  People enjoyed the expanded food booths and wide variety of entertainment. As in past years, the most popular booth was that serving strawberry shortcake.  Festival-goers looked forward to the annual 4th of July Family Days Celebration and Parade down SW 152nd Street.

Interim City Manager

 

SeaTac

Nationally Renowned Development Expert to Visit SeaTacOn August 2, Marilee Utter, President of the Urban Land Institute, will meet with the City Council to present her views about transit-oriented development (TOD) in each of the proposed light rail stations in the SeaTac area.  Ms. Utter is recognized nationally for her expertise in TOD.  She will spend August 1 examining the two future sites of the proposed light rail stations, meeting with property owners, and applying her knowledge of TOD to the conditions unique to those areas. Her analysis, with specific recommendations for positive action, will be the focus of the Council’s regular meeting on August 2.  She will present the City’s opportunities for transforming the proposed light rail station areas by tapping into market and demographic forces to bring a higher return to the City in the long run. 

 

Ms. Utter defines TOD as “an organizing principle to do what we should be doing anyway – creating great places.”  TOD accommodates a variety of transportation modes (pedestrian, bicycles, public transit, etc) rather than focusing intensely on the automobile.  It offers local services and amenities without driving, and increases housing opportunities for a mix of income levels.  Infrastructure costs are less (as much as 20% less) to serve TOD than for more conventional development models.  TOD becomes a powerful ‘generator’ for economic development; it not only protects neighborhoods, but creates a much more satisfying way of life for greater numbers of residents.  

 

SeaTac Building Official Named President of the Washington State Association of Building Officials (WABO):  The WABO recently elected SeaTac’s new Building Official, Gary Schenk, as its president.  Gary’s term is for the next two years.  WABO is a nonprofit professional association of state, county, and city officials engaged in the development, enforcement, and administration of building construction codes.  WABO actively participates in the building code development process at international, national, and state levels and provides training on current building code enforcement issues. 

 

A Good Day for the Senior Program:  The Washington State Association of Senior Centers held their annual conference in Leavenworth.  Kathleen Cummings, Senior Services Coordinator for the City of SeaTac, won the Professional of the Year award at the conference.  Kathleen has worked for the City for nearly eleven years and has been vital in the growth and expansion of the SeaTac Senior Program.  The Senior Program also won the New Program of the Year award for their Tour de Lunch program that was offered last year during construction of the Senior Center.  The Tour de Lunch was a transitional program for seniors that consisted of two travel days per week, where they visited other senior centers in the area for lunch and one rest day in which sack lunches were served in the Community Center gym.  

 

Fire Department News:  The Fire Department recently completed an upgrade to their Self Contained Breathing Apparatus to make them compliant with new standards for chemical/bio/radiological/nuclear incidents.  Several firefighters completed the upgrade during a two week period.  The funding was from a federal Homeland security grant for King County.  This grant saved the City close to $20,000 for the upgrades.

National Night Out Against Crime: If your business is located near a residential neighborhood, National Night Out may be a great way for you to help your business by meeting your neighbors and reducing crime.  Each year, thousands of neighborhood groups in hundreds of cities across the United States participate in National Night Out by holding neighborhood block parties on the same night.  These block parties reduce crime by helping neighbors get to know one another and meeting representatives from the local police department and other city staff.  This year’s event will be held the evening of Tuesday August 1. 

 

If you have a business that is adjacent to a residential neighborhood or apartment community, you can team up with some of those neighbors to host a potluck, BBQ, ice cream social, or anything else to draw people together.  Whatever you decide to do, organize it now!  Contact Robbie Burns (Community Policing) at (206) 431-2197 or rburns@ci.tukwila.wa.us to “register” and get advice on having a great event.

 

Teambuilding Through the Environment:  If you are looking for a great teambuilding activity for your employees, consider joining a work party at Duwamish Riverbend Hill (near South 115th Street and Interurban Avenue). Over the past couple of months, volunteers have set aside one Saturday per month to remove invasive plant species from the Duwamish Riverbend Hill as part of the restoration of the Hill’s unique natural ecosystem.  While this site has many unique native species that are now rare along the Duwamish River, there are also many invasive exotics that have colonized the site.  Initial stewardship activities focus on removing invasive vegetation including scotch broom, blackberry, and english ivy.

Ambassador Connection

Things I have gained from the Chamber, other than additional business!

 

Everyone knows how valuable the Chamber can be with helping you build your business but there are numerous other gains.  Being a new business, there is always a giant learning curve.  Did you know that if you want to tow a car from your parking lot you have to have a contract with a towing company?  Good thing I met Skyway Towing through the Chamber. 

 

The day before we opened our doors, I realized we did not have any lettering for our entrances stating the hours of our operations.  Good thing I met Fast Signs through the Chamber. 

 

To take the Chamber to another level I became an Ambassador.  Being an Ambassador has allowed me to increase the exposure of ACME to the business community as well as increase my networking contacts. 

 

My biggest challenge with opening ACME Bowling, Billiards & Events, was to overcome people stereotypes of what a bowling alley can be.  With the networking breakfasts, I was able to talk to many people about our upscale, non-smoking, hi-tech facility.  Before we even opened our doors, we had the community excited to see what we were all about, and that was largely due to our involvement with the Chamber.

I encourage you to take a moment and consider becoming an Ambassador with the Chamber. You get out of the Chamber only what you put in.

SEATTLE CHRISTIAN

Seattle Christian Schools Selects New Superintendent:  The Seattle Christian Schools’ Board of Directors has selected a superintendent to replace Dr. Greg Johnson, interim superintendent during the 2005-06 school year.  Seattle Christian Schools’ newly named superintendent is Gloria Hunter, currently assistant superintendent for Yelm Community Schools, a district of 5,000 students in Thurston County.  Gloria Hunter will assume her responsibilities on   July 1, 2006.

 

Hunter previously worked in administrative and teaching positions with North Thurston, Olympia, and Longview School Districts and has served as an adjunct instructor for Seattle Pacific University.

 

Board President Mark Blaisdell said, “Gloria has demonstrated integrity and a proven record of success during her 32-year career in education as an elementary school teacher, principal, director of community relations and strategic planning, and assistant superintendent.  This unanimous decision of the Board was also the overwhelming recommendation of those who were able to participate in the recent open forums for parents and staff.”

 

Hunter holds superintendent and principal credentials from Seattle Pacific University where she also received her master’s degree, with additional graduate work completed at Pacific Lutheran University.

 

HIGHLINE

Highline School Board Honors Employees - Special Awards Announced: Each year, Highline Public Schools honors the important work performed by classified employees through the Classified Employee of the Year Award. 

 

This year, there were 22 employees, representing a wide array of departments and job categories, nominated by their peers for Classified Employee of the Year. The nominees were honored at the May 24 meeting of the Highline School Board. During the recognition, Superintendent Welch remarked, “The Classified Nomination Review and Selection Committee enjoyed reviewing the nominations. These folks represent the very best of the nearly 1,100 classified employees in the district. Each and every nominee should feel extremely honored by the respect revealed in the letters from your co-workers, students, and supervisors.  I join the School Board in saying congratulations to all of you – we are so proud of you!”

 

Along with Nancy Pappas Barnhart, director of human resources-classified personnel, Superintendent Welch named recipients of awards in six categories:

 

Extra Mile Award  This award reflects an extraordinary and a daily “above and beyond attitude” in service to students, parents, co-workers, supervisors, and district neighbors; and a consistency in “going the extra mile”.

The review committee was impressed with two special nominations and determined that “a legend is a legend, even if they are retired!” Two Honorary Legend awards were made this year.
