·  President’s Message

It seems like every September, when the children go back to school, it’s time to buckle down to business. September for me is almost like the beginning of a new year. I am planning ahead to the holidays and, at the same time, realizing all that I have to get done in the next few months! Odd how each new school year restarts my energy, especially since my two adult children both graduated more than a decade ago and the “first day of school” is a thing of the past for me!

There is a lot going on at the Chamber this Fall. At our October Membership Luncheon, we have the opportunity to hear Dr. Bonnie Dunbar, the Museum of Flight President, speak on her journey as an astronaut. I have heard Dr. Dunbar speak and I encourage you to come to the luncheon to hear her presentation. The Luncheon will be held at Rainier Golf and Country Club on Friday, October 13.

Then, in November, we will celebrate excellence at the A·C·E Awards reception at the Hilton Seattle Airport & Conference Center. The event is Thursday, November 2 beginning at 4:00pm. It’s not too late to nominate your company and another Chamber member.
Click here for the nomination form.

We are in the middle of putting together the 2007 Business Directory and Community Profile. Dac Randall is contacting Chamber members interested in purchasing an advertisement in the publication. The directory/profile will be mailed to members in mid-December. If you are interested in an ad in the directory, please contact Dac at the Chamber office, 206.575.1633. Also, please remember to return the verification form with your company’s information. We want to make sure you are listed correctly in the 2007 directory/profile.

The Ambassadors are busy meeting with new and renewing members. When they visit members, they don’t go empty-handed. Ambassadors deliver Thank You bags when they visit. The supply of items for the bags is quickly dwindling and you can help! Please bring to the Chamber office any promotional items you want to have distributed. This is a perfect way to advertise your business to other Chamber members. If you would like more information on this promotion, please contact Jennifer Tanzy at the Chamber office, 206.575.1633, jtanzy@swkcc.org.

Of course, you can always join us at one of our regular committee meetings. Just click onto the Chamber Calendar to find out the details. Your participation will be welcome!

Thank you for supporting the Chamber! Our members are our most appreciated assets! It’s our reason for being!

·  Astronaut Dr. Bonnie J. Dunbar to Speak at October Membership Luncheon

Dr. Bonnie J. Dunbar, President and CEO of The Museum of Flight, will be the Chamber’s guest speaker at the October 13th Membership Luncheon.

The Museum of Flight is the largest private air and space museum in the world, with an education program that provides for nearly 100,000 students per year and an aircraft restoration center. Dr. Dunbar recently retired from the NASA Johnson Space Center where she was Associate Director, Technology Integration and Risk Management for the Space Life Sciences Directorate (SLSD) of the NASA Johnson Space Center. SLSD is responsible for Astronaut Crew Health, Human Health Research for Space Exploration, Human Factor Design of Spacecraft, and Life Support Requirements.

A NASA Mission Specialist astronaut and veteran of 5 space flights, Dr. Dunbar has logged more than 50 days in space. She has served as the Payload Commander on two flights, including the first Space Shuttle docking mission to the Russian Space Station Mir. Dr. Dunbar will be speaking about her missions as a NASA Astronaut as well as the experiences involved in being President and CEO of the Museum of Flight. We will be extending our Luncheon time to 2:00 pm to give Dr. Dunbar a full hour for her exciting presentation. The luncheon will be held on October 13, from 11:30 am to 2:00 pm at Rainier Golf and Country Club. The cost is $20 pre-paid or $25 at the door. To register, contact the Chamber at 206.575.1633 or
click here.

·  South King County's Economic Climate is Red Hot

The Southwest King County Chamber is proud to be a sponsor of the 2006 South King County Economic Engine Luncheon. Attend and find out first-hand why our region's business climate is sizzling-and how you can make that economic heat work for you.

Get all the details on everything from development trends to employee wages to traffic bottlenecks in this year's soon-to-be-released South King County Economic Engine Report. While you're noshing, you'll have a chance to listen to a line-up of A-list speakers, including Bob Drewel, executive director of the Puget Sound Regional Council, and listen to report highlights.

Some 17 South King County cities were included in this year's report, with 300 businesses surveyed on everything from job growth to expansion plans. This report comes out only once every two years.

So be sure to grab the report after you grab some lunch. And be sure to bring your sunglasses. South King County's future is so bright you've got to wear shades.

Reserve your red-hot seat today and a copy of the report.

·  Transportation Improvements Coming to Airport Area

The Port of Seattle and Sound Transit are working together to bring Link light rail to the airport and expand airport road capacity to handle increasing traffic.

This fall, there will be intermittent detours, lane restrictions and other impacts. Motorists should expect the following:

  • The ramp from South 170th Street to the northbound airport expressway is closed permanently in connection with building the light rail guide way between the northbound and southbound lanes of the expressway;
  • The one-way northbound expressway lanes will temporarily convert to two-way as the southbound lanes close for reconstruction;
  • A temporary return-to-terminal route via South 170th and Air Cargo Road is open and will remain in use while workers build a new lengthened return-to-terminal loop via South 160th Street; and
  • The existing recirculation ramps at the north end of the airport garage will be torn down to make way for Sound Transit’s SeaTac/Airport Station, just north of the garage.

For a map of the project and details, or to sign up to receive e-mail updates on this and other airport projects, go to
