·  From the Chairman

Greetings Members!

Fall has certainly arrived, the leaves are turning, things are hopping, and business is booming!

Another sign of fall around the Chamber is the upcoming 2007 A·C·E Awards. I am pleased to be a part of this fantastic event - an event that honors our outstanding Chamber members and provides an evening of fun for everyone. This year's event, set to a Mardi Gras theme, is on track to be the best yet! There are still sponsorship opportunities available, at every level. Your support of the event will help to ensure that the 2007 A·C·E Awards fully recognize and support our nominees and winners at this premiere event. I am proud to say that I have pledged my support for this year's event, and I hope you will too.

New to the A·C·E Awards celebration this year is a silent auction. The A·C·E Committee is still looking for a few more auction items. Donating to the auction is a great way to advertise your business to other Chamber members. If your business does not have items or services that can be donated, consider purchasing an item and donating it on behalf of your business. All donations are appreciated and will help to make this portion of the A·C·E Awards a great success. If you would like to donate an item, please contact Dianna at the Chamber office for more information.

Watch your mail for your invitation to this event and be sure to mark your calendars!

Thank you for your loyalty and support of the Chamber.

Have a safe Halloween!

Chuck Cox
Chairman

 ·  Sea-Tac Airport One of the Nation's Greenest Airports

Last month, an independent report revealed the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport has one of strongest and most comprehensive environmental programs of any U.S. airport.

Conducted by the non-profit Clean Airport Partnership and commissioned by the Port of Seattle, the report recognized the airport's current environmental achievements and identified additional opportunities the airport could focus on to further reduce its environmental footprint. The airport's recycling program, which annually prevents 1,250 tons of material from ending up in local landfills, and the airport's energy efficiency program, which through lighting retrofits, has reduced the airport's energy use by about 25 percent a square foot are just two examples of the efforts designed to make Sea-Tac a "green" airport. "We will evaluate the ideas identified in the report, and continue to make financial sustainability a key part of the equation as we work to become the cleanest, greenest and most energy efficient airport, and a role model for others," said Sea-Tac's Managing Director Mark M. Reis.

·  Famous Dave's BBQ "Rib-bon" Cutting

Famous Dave's BBQ celebrated the opening of their newest location in Tukwila with a "Rib-bon" Cutting and celebration on September 26.

Attendees of the celebration were treated to cheers from Wilbur the Pig, who arrived to the party via a Tukwila Fire truck - with sirens blaring! Tukwila City Councilmember Joan Hernandez was honored with the task of "cutting the rib", rather than ribbon. Attendees were also treated to a wonderful lunch, courtesy of Famous Dave's BBQ.

The Tukwila location is Famous Dave's BBQ's 144th location nationwide and brings 120 jobs to Tukwila. The restaurant is located at 17770 Southcenter Parkway in Tukwila.

·  Burien - Citybeats

Lora Lake Apartments: Burien continues to be confronted with tough challenges as the City tries to follow longstanding plans to revitalize the Northeast Redevelopment Area next to Sea-Tac Airport. It has been the City's position that the site of the Lora Lake Apartments near the north end of the airport's third runway should be converted to non-residential uses. The apartments were vacated by July 20, as required in a 2000 agreement between the City, Port and the King County Housing Authority, and demolition began in mid-September.

Despite intense media coverage and political pressure to keep the apartments open, the City Council has held firm in its position that because of the proximity to Sea-Tac airport's third runway, Lora Lake is not a safe and healthy place to live and should be demolished, with the property transitioned to non-residential uses.

Seahurst Land: The City has purchased nine acres at the southern edge of Seahurst Park, expanding the park and protecting the acreage from future development. The City Council on September 10 approved the purchase of the property for $750,000. The property is in its natural state, with steep slopes, ravines, thick second-growth forest and several creeks, including the spring source for Seahurst Creek, the main creek that flows through the park center. The City will keep the land as open space and has no plans to develop it or add any park-related improvements.

Traffic Cameras: The City Council in August approved a new traffic enforcement measure that will allow the Police Department to use automated traffic cameras to detect stoplight infractions and school speed zone violations. The fine for violations is $101. Signs will be posted at all locations where automated traffic safety cameras are in use. The cameras will be installed next spring.

Recreation Center: Plans are progressing for a new community recreation center to replace the existing Burien Community Center. Public workshops were held on July 12 and September 20, at which citizens learned more about the project and offered ideas and suggestions. A follow-up workshop for the public is scheduled for October 18.

·  SeaTac - Citybeats

City receives Governor's Smart Communities Award: We are proud to announce that the City of SeaTac has received the Governor's Smart Communities Award! SeaTac won in the "Smart Vision Award" category for excellence in comprehensive planning. The award recognizes the City's Station Area Action plans for the SeaTac/Airport Station Area and the South 154th Street Station Area, which provide a vision and action steps for redevelopment of light rail transit areas that will serve citizens of and visitors to SeaTac.

Awards were available in three categories with two winners per category. The City of SeaTac is one of only six local governments statewide in 2007 to receive this distinguished award. Nominees for the Smart Vision Award category were evaluated according to several criteria including excellence in comprehensive planning, thorough, and meaningful public participation, ability to carry out the goals of the Growth Management Act, and ability to provide an innovative solution or a model for other communities.

Station Area Plan Implementation Outreach: City staff, along with consultants from Heartland, have been meeting with key property owners in both the SeaTac/Airport Station Area and the 154th Street Station Area. At these meetings, property owners have been provided an overview of the respective station area plans, information about forthcoming infrastructure improvements, and details regarding City coordination to implement the plans. As needed, staff and consultants will follow-up with property owners to get a better understanding of redevelopment potential at respective properties and issues regarding new infrastructure improvements.

City Emergency Preparedness Staff Conduct Training Exercise: City staff from all departments participated in a walk through of the City's Emergency Coordination Center and held a small practical table top exercise. The exercise was an ice storm with multiple situations occurring simultaneously. The exercise brought to light areas for improvement and areas where staff did very well. City staff will continue to evaluate and exercise the City's Emergency Operations Plan.

2008 Budget Preparation: The City has begun the process of developing the 2008 Budget. The City Council is holding budget workshops in September and October. The Council began their work with the first budget workshop discussing priorities and major assumptions for 2008. The 2008 Preliminary Budget must be filed with the City Clerk by November 2.

The Preliminary Budget, detailing the City Manager's funding recommendations to the City Council for the coming year, will be presented to the Council for consideration in November. A public hearing on the proposed budget will be held on November 27 at the Regular Council Meeting. Following the public hearing, the Council will consider any proposed changes to the preliminary budget before adopting the City's 2008 Annual Budget.

 ·  Tukwila - Citybeats

Tukwila Village: On September 17, 2007 the Tukwila City Council approved a new vision statement for Tukwila Village. It reads, "Tukwila Village will be a welcoming place where all residents can gather and connect with each other. This mixed-use development will draw upon Tukwila's strengths and include a library, a neighborhood police resource center, retail, restaurants, public meeting space, and an outdoor plaza. The Village may also include office, live/work, and residential space. This active, vibrant space will set high standards for quality and foster additional neighborhood revitalization and civic pride." City staff are currently drafting a request for qualifications (RFQ) that will be used to solicit developer interest. For more information contact Derek Speck, Economic Development Administrator at dspeck@ci.tukwila.wa.us or 206-433-1832.

Domestic Violence: Remember that your employees can join a 5 or 10 kilometers walk along the beautiful Green River Trail in the second annual Steppin' Out to Stop Domestic Violence Walk-a-Thon on Saturday, October 6th between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at Starfire Sports at Fort Dent Park in Tukwila. For more information, visit www.SOSDomesticViolence.com.

Southcenter Square Opens: Congratulations to Wig Properties for the exciting opening of Southcenter Square which is over 200,000 square feet of retail on Southcenter Parkway at Minkler Boulevard. In September, the center opened with Nordstrom Rack and DSW (Designer Shoe Wholesale). Kohl's will open October 3rd. Panera Bread and others will open soon thereafter.

·  Seattle Christian School - Education Corner

Seattle Christian School started the 61st year of instruction on Tuesday, September 4th for secondary students and September 5th for elementary students. On Sept 6th the high school spent the day bonding at a high school retreat at Lake Retreat. The ASB provided a full day of competition between the classes and homerooms and the Camp provided excellent meals to keep the students' energy levels high. The middle school had their retreat on September 7th.

Enrollment has reached record highs this year and is still climbing. Both the elementary and secondary school have new principals: Eric Priebe, elementary and Stephanie Knipp, secondary. Craig Wrolstad is the new athletic director and assistant principal in secondary.

We look forward to a year filled with educating minds, nurturing hearts and honoring Christ.
