President’s Message |
|
The holidays are quickly approaching and like me, I’m
sure you are feeling your blood pressure rise with all of the
parties, shopping, planning, and decorating you will have to
juggle with your busy career and the other routine necessities
that we call our lives!
How lucky we are to have so
much to worry about! It keeps us happy and needed. During this
pending holiday season my hope for you is that you can keep
your glass half full and not half empty. Look at the joy you
are bringing to your friends and family, but most of all, take
care of yourself. Just remember, everything will get done,
eventually! And it’s important that you won’t be too tired to
enjoy it!
Let other Chamber members help you with your
holiday lists. Visit our website at swkcc.org and scan through
the members to see which ones might help you with gift
certificates, party planning, flowers and gifts. I know you
will find the perfect something for your perfect
someone!
Party planning is always so much fun, but can
also be hectic and tiring. If you don’t believe this, just ask
the wonderful ACE team that presented the ACE Awards
celebration on November 2nd at the Hilton Hotel and Conference
Center. If you weren’t there, you missed one great happening!
Participants entered the Speakeasy location with a password,
were greeted by flappers, and quickly became absorbed in the
delectable hors d’oeuvres, 20’s theme music, and gambling
options ranging from bingo to roulette. About halfway through
the event, the Keystone Kops ran through the venue chasing
black and white striped clad prisoners and ordered everyone to
vacate the gambling area. Once order was restored, the award
presentations began.
My personal congratulations to the
winners and others nominated. Winner of the Large Employer
Business Excellence Award was Costco - Southcenter while Meal
Makers of Burien won the Small Employer Business Excellence.
The Beautification Award went to Landmark on the Sound in Des
Moines and the Non-Profit/Humanitarian Award was won by Ruth
Dykeman Children's Center.
I am already looking
forward to next year to see what the committee decides to do.
I can already tell you, you will not want to miss it!
Nancy

City Beats - Burien |
|
North Highline Annexation: The City Council in
November voted to designate the full North Highline study area
as a Potential Annexation Area (PAA). The action completed a
year-long community outreach effort in cooperation with Burien
and North Highline residents as well as Seattle and King
County. The Council also voted to authorize a consulting group
to conduct a study of the financial and related impacts of
annexation of the full study area, and the impacts of no
annexation. After the financial analysis is complete, the City
Council will decide whether to proceed with additional
annexation-related work, including more discussions with North
Highline and Burien residents and businesses about the
benefits and costs of annexation. If the City decides after
the financial study to proceed with the annexation, residents
of the annexation area would vote on the annexation, probably
in November 2007. If approved, the actual annexation would not
take place until 2008 or 2009.
City Manager: On
Nov. 6, the City Council authorized contract negotiations with
Mike Martin, former Kent City Administrator, for the position
of Burien City Manager. Waldron & Company conducted the
recruitment and hiring process that began in August. Interim
City Manager David Cline will return to his former position of
Assistant City Manager when a new City Manager comes on board.
Earthquake Drill: Burien government along with
other public safety agencies took part in a disaster drill to
be better prepared for when an actual disaster happens. At 9
a.m. on October 25, the drill began with a 7.0 magnitude
earthquake lasting 1 ½ minutes. Drill participants conducted
the “duck, cover and hold” drill and rode the earthquake out.
After the shaking stopped, participants evacuated their
buildings and moved to an open area. Drill participants
reported to the Emergency Operations Center where City
officials assessed the damage and determined strategies,
priorities and tactics for the emergency response.
West Nile Virus: The City of Burien activated
its West Nile Virus Response Plan to reduce the spread of West
Nile virus following an announcement Oct. 13 that the disease
has been detected in three dead crows in King County. The City
moved to Alert Level 2, in which information was distributed
to residents to alert them to the presence of the virus and
ways to protect themselves. The City also sent out a brochure
on controlling mosquitoes to private property owners with
private storm water facilities.

City Beats - SeaTac |
|
Des Moines Memorial Drive Banners: The cities of
SeaTac and Des Moines recently completed the installation of
banners on Des Moines Memorial Drive to honor veterans of
World War I. This was a collaborative effort with the Parks
and Public Works Departments from both cities, and was
undertaken with the consent of Seattle City Light and Puget
Sound Energy for the use of their respective utility poles.
The WWI Living Road of Remembrance banners are part of a
significant effort by the representatives of King County and
the cities of Burien, SeaTac, Des Moines and Normandy Park to
continue to recognize the contributions of the veterans of the
first World War. The banners will be displayed annually
through the Thanksgiving holiday.
Grandview Park
Work Party: On Wednesday, October 18, park maintenance
staff members from eight local cities teamed up and did some
extensive mowing, brush clearing, hard surface cleaning,
repairs, and other maintenance items at the Grandview Park
off-leash dog area. The cities of SeaTac, Kent, Auburn,
Burien, Tukwila, Des Moines, Federal Way, and Renton all
provided labor and equipment to assist Serve Our Dog Areas
(S.O.D.A.), the volunteer organization that controls the day
to day operation of the site. This work opportunity was a one
time event this year and it addressed the maintenance tasks
that S.O.D.A. does not have the equipment or the means to
complete. At the conclusion of the assigned tasks, S.O.D.A.
provided a barbeque lunch to thank the crews for their hard
work, which allowed the maintenance staff members to interact
and reflect on the common goals and a job well done. This
coalition of cities has been working together with S.O.D.A. at
Grandview Park since its transformation into an off-leash dog
park in 2001.
Police News: Police and several
City departments met with Redflex on November 2. Redflex is
the chosen vendor to implement automated Red Light and,
possibly, School Zone Speed enforcement programs in the City.
The kick-off meeting was the first step in a systematic
approach to identifying high accident locations, which will be
outfitted with technology that will automatically cite Red
Light runners in SeaTac. The camera technology will eventually
cite registered owners of vehicles that run red lights. Those
tickets will be civil infractions, similar to parking tickets
with a $101 fine. Many local cities are implementing similar
technology proven to lower accidents and increase traffic
safety. SeaTac’s program could be in place shortly after
January 1, 2007.
Fall Recycle and Yard Debris
Events: Saturday, October 14, the City of SeaTac hosted
its Fall Special Recycling Event. 375 loads were collected at
the event to be recycled. On the following Saturday, October
21, the City hosted its Fall Yard Debris Collection Event at
Tyee High School. There were 458 vehicle loads, collecting
85.22 tons of yard debris. The City has the yard debris
transported to Pacific Topsoil where it is composted,
diverting the organics from the landfill. Composting also
decreases the need for commercial fertilizers, adds nutrients
and helps maintain the correct soil pH, increases water
retention, and reduces water runoff. Residents continue to
appreciate these recycling events, where most items are
accepted for free, that give them an opportunity to clean up
their properties.
